ROADWAY PROJECTS

KATY FREEWAY CORRIDOR PROJECT - TxDOT, HOUSTON, TEXAS

AIA was the lead structural engineering firm for the entire Katy Freeway Corridor Project. This project included the reconstruction of approximately 26 overpasses and fully directional interchanges of Beltway 8, IH 610.  AIA revised the bridge layouts and design, provided guidance for design, set design criteria, coordinated aesthetics, participated in public meetings, administered construction phasing and construction cost estimate, and created standards for concrete sign columns for the corridor in accordance with aesthetic requirements. AIA also reviewed and approved all bridge layouts and details. Early coordination with all sections helped in standardizing the bridge details like the inverted T cap dimensions, the column spacing, type and size of foundations, deck drainage and beam spans. We conducted group workshops to provide design guidance and explain design criteria. Review and recommendations helped save significant drilled shaft length on Beltway 8 foundations, and helped reduce the number of expensive steel spans on several direct connectors and braided ramps.

IH-10 and IH 610 Interchange: In addition to the review of all structures, AIA reviewed the schematic and provided recommendations for schematic refinement for the IH 610 and IH –10 ~ 4 level interchange. The purpose of the review was to look for fatal flaws in the constructability, check horizontal and vertical alignments for minimizing direct connector outages, constructability, structure depth, vertical and horizontal clearances, datum differences in different alignments and locations of conflict with existing bents. Results of the review yielded in modifications to structure depths, realignments to IH 610 mainlanes and direct connectors.

Beltway 8 and IH –10 ~ 5 level interchange:  Review included evaluation of the horizontal and vertical alignments for minimizing direct connector outages, constructability, structure depth, vertical and horizontal clearances, datum differences in different alignments and locations of conflict with existing bents. Review yielded in recommendation to add lanes to IH-10 at this interchange and replace existing direct connectors to minimize weaving, increase safety and capacity for the IH-10 mainlanes.

WESTPARK TOLLWAY, SECTIONS 2 AND E1, HOUSTON, TEXAS

AIA managed and led the structural design effort for this project which included converting existing overpass at SH 6 to a 3-level grade separation including direct connectors to and from SH 6 with the Westpark Toll Road. Project included design of 3500 feet of mainlane-depressed section of the Westpark Tollway, approximately 2000 LF of entrance and exit ramps, 2000 feet of Alief Clodine, SH 6 northbound and southbound frontage roads. The project also included two bridges for the SH 6 frontage roads over the proposed Tollway, drilled shaft and sheet pile retaining walls, pump station for the depressed section, relocation of 2 ~ 5 x 4 box culverts and intersection design for SH 6 frontage roads and Alief Clodine. Extremely tight right of way, HL&P towers, a 20-inch high-pressure gas line and replacement of foundations of the existing SH 6 Bridge with live traffic added to the complexity of the project.

FM 1488 from FM 2978 to IH 45, -  Montgomery County

This is the first pass through tolling project let in the State of Texas. Project involved widening of a 2 lane rural roadway to a 4 lane roadway with a continuous turn lane for a length of 7 miles. Part of the project was designed as a urban section with storm sewers, curb and gutters while the remaining portion was designed as a rural section with open ditches. Properties adjacent to the highways were getting developed at a rapid pace and required adjustments tot ROW takings and alignments. Two miles of the project went thru a forest area. Several utilities along the project needed adjustment. The project was designed on a fast track and involved coordination with City of Conroe, Montgomery County Transportation Program and TxDOT. Drainage was a challenge considering limited ROW and limited channel work beyond ROW. Incorporated project manual, estimate and quantities and notes for Pass thru financing. Responsible for seven signal layouts and signing and pavement markings for 6.7 miles of roadway.  Project was designed on a fast track. The AIA staff worked closely with all entities to assure on-time project delivery. Signal design included the installation of a video detection system consisting of VIVDS cameras placed at appropriate locations within the intersection.  Intersection design also included elevations, quantities, notes, and the necessary TxDOT standards.

The intersection structure was all steel design and included 2000 ft. of retaining wall. The substructure was reinforced concrete construction. The abutment consisted of a rectangular reinforced concrete beam supported with drilled shafts and the bents were cantilevered beam - hammerhead piers, some supported with single columns and others with two columns.
